Geoff Carolan has over 25 years experience in corporate and finance law gained both in private practice and in house as General Counsel. He is admitted as a Solicitor of the Courts of Hong Kong and as a Barrister and Solicitor of New Zealand. Geoff has specialised in mergers and acquisitions, corporate structuring, joint ventures and telecommunications.
Since returning to New Zealand in late 2007, Geoff has worked as a consultant and special Project Counsel to Hutchison Whampoa’s Asia Telecommunications group, negotiating and structuring the sale and purchase of major telecommunication assets; multi-million dollar joint venture agreements and network expansion agreements throughout multiple jurisdictions and managed various personal business and property investments.
From 1998 to 2007, Geoff was Head General Counsel for Hutchison Whampoa’s Indian mobile telecommunications business, overseeing expansion from a one city operation of 100,000 subscribers to a pan-Indian business of 25m subscribers. As head of a 50+ legal team, Geoff was intimately involved in the strategy, acquisitions, greenfield start-ups, multiple joint venture relationships, consolidation and corporate financing that culminated in Hutchison Whampoa’s creation of value and eventual sale of such assets to Vodafone in 2007 for US$11b.
Prior to 1998, Geoff worked in private practice as a corporate and finance lawyer in Hong Kong for Stevenson Wong and Co and before that in Auckland as a senior solicitor with one of New Zealand’s preeminent law firms, Russell McVeagh McKenzie Bartleet &Co.
Geoff was a director of all of Hutchison Whampoa's Indian operating companies and offshore holding companies from 1998 to 2007. Since returning to New Zealand he has been involved in a number of business investments and is a director of companies across a number of varied sectors from investment funds to property, software development, primary production and construction.
